Today in Tama County District Court, Karina Cooper was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the 2021 murder of her husband, Ryan Cooper.
From the very beginning this case has been about Ryan. He was a son, a brother, and a friend. He was a man who should still be here. Ryan mattered. What stood out most in court today were the voices of his family. Their statements were powerful and emotional, and they reminded everyone exactly who Ryan was and how deep this loss has been. Their courage to stand and speak about him in that setting will stay with me forever.
This case took years of hard work. Investigator Trevor Killian devoted himself to this investigation, with support from Deputy Brian Randall when needed. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation played a paramount role throughout this case, and the Iowa Attorney Generals Office and many other agencies also gave their full effort to see it through. Their dedication made today possible.
I also want to recognize the outstanding work in the courtroom by Tama County Assistant Attorney Geneva Williams, along with Assistant Iowa Attorneys General Mike Ringle and Israel Kodiaga. Their preparation and determination carried this case through trial and eliminated any doubt that lingered over the years since Ryan’s murder. Their work ensured that justice was fully delivered.
To the Cooper family, I know no sentence can fill the hole Ryan’s loss has left, but I hope today gives you some peace after such a long road. To Karina’s family, I also recognize this is a painful day. A tragedy like this leaves scars on every side.
The Tama County Sheriffs Office stands for victims and for the truth. Justice is not a goal for us, it is our duty, and that duty will never end.
Ryan Cooper’s life mattered. His family made sure no one forgets that, and we will continue to carry that forward. Ryan will never be forgotten.
